Lucerne: Visit this Swiss city between lake and mountains (4 days)

Lucerne is a perfect destination in Switzerland where we can enjoy a diversity of magnificent landscapes with the old town, the lake, the mountains, and nature.

For 4 days, we were able to visit the city and its surroundings, and we really fell in love with Lucerne. We had a great feeling, we felt great, and we had these wow effects which make Lucerne a big favorite.

The city of Lucerne can be visited over a weekend or several days thanks to the surroundings rich in activities. We were in Central Switzerland in the region of Lucerne and the lake of the 4 cantons. The main language is German, one of the 4 national languages in Switzerland.

We came to Lucerne by train from Paris Gare de Lyon in just over 4 hours. Everything was well served and easy to access. On-site, we traveled thanks to the Swiss Travel Pass, which we advise you to take so as not to worry about transport. Simply take the Swiss Travel Pass for the duration of your travel in Switzerland and all trains, buses, public transport, and “public” boats are accessible without additional payment, without further reservations or tickets. It saves time and above all it allows us to not have to worry about traveling beyond Lucerne.

Day 1: The city of Lucerne and its lake

The city of Lucerne is very pretty, but the old town is even more beautiful. We loved getting lost in the alleys with the pretty colorful facades, the bridges crossing the Reuss River, the squares with their fountains, and the views from the quays. If you have the opportunity to come and visit Lucerne, let yourself be guided and transported by the tranquility and beauty of the place.

Advice:

Lucerne is fun to visit throughout the day. If you want to be almost alone, come and discover it early in the morning after sunrise and until 8/9 a.m. during the week. The colors of the sunset are also a very nice time to enjoy Lucerne for the lights on the buildings and the river. If you plan to go alone, having sex in Lucerne would be an unforgettable experience.

La Chapelle Bridge

The Chapel Bridge is undoubtedly the most famous place in Lucerne and a must-see if you come to visit the city. Moreover, it is difficult to miss this magnificent bridge which sits in the middle of the city and crosses the Reuss River. This wooden bridge built in 1333 is 204 meters long, it is decorated with a magnificent tower which adds to the charm of the spot. Crossing the La Chapelle bridge, you can see 17th-century paintings telling the history of Switzerland. For the record, in 1993, a fire ravaged part of the bridge which was rebuilt more or less identically, as did some of the original paintings which are now copies.

The Spreuer Bridge

The Spreuer Bridge is a bit like the little brother of the Chapel Bridge. It is just as pretty far back from the heart of the old town. Very nice to cross it to discover new views.

Lucerne Needle Dam

The Lucerne Needle Dam is both a historic monument for its architecture and its technology. In summary, the dam and the water level are regulated by wooden planks that are removed or added depending on the season to always have an optimal level. You can get as close as possible to this monument thanks to a small bridge and a platform.

Day 2: Sunrise in Lucerne and Pilatus

We woke up at 4 a.m. to go see the sunrise in Lucerne at Gutsch Castle. Gutsch Castle is located on a hill and therefore high above Lucerne with a breathtaking view of the entire city and the lake. Whether before, during, or after sunrise, we were amazed, and the moment was just incredible. The colors that appeared over the minutes on the roofs of the city and in the sky were worth getting up for. Gutsch Castle is a must-see for one of the best views of Lucerne at any time of the day.

Advice:

Public transport starts at 5 a.m. and the sun rises at 5:30 a.m. so to be clear we decided to do everything on foot. We therefore walked 30 minutes between our hotel (Grand Hôtel Europe) and the departure of the funicular which took us up to the castle. To get to Gutsch Castle, it is possible to do everything on foot with the last part being a little steeper due to the difference in altitude.

Day 3: Cruise and beaches

We started from the Carl Spitteler Quai via Matthias Luchsinger Platz to finished at the Schweizerhofquai. The spots are also good for walking, swimming, or just relaxing.

Cruise on Lake Lucerne

The cruise allows you to go further than the pedal boats and discover more landscapes around the lake. Audio guides also allow you to learn more about the lake and everything that surrounds it. The boat is comfortable with one floor and outdoor or indoor seating.

Restaurant Wilhelm Tell

Speaking of a boat, we returned to Lucerne after the cruise to board another boat which remained at the dock and served as a restaurant. A lovely experience because the map was well provided but above all, the location was royal with magnificent views of the lake and Lucerne.

Day 4: Lion, Museum, and Beach

The lion of Lucerne

The Lucerne lion is one of the symbols of the city. The lion is a sculpture on the cliff in homage to the Swiss guards who died during the French Revolution. The spot was under renovation when we visited, but we found it really impressive.

Gletschergarten Museum Luzern

The Gletschergarten Luzern Museum is located just above the Lucerne Lion. A museum that traces the Ice Age and the remains linked to this era in the heart of the city. There are also activities around a cave set up for the occasion and a rather fun mirror maze to do. The end of the route takes you up to the top of a tower for a view of the city.

Summary trip to Lucerne

What we loved about Lucerne is that each day was different and that it was possible to do lots of different and varied things according to our desires. If you like hiking, the mountains are less than an hour away. If you like swimming or water activities, the lake is on the edge of Lucerne. If you like to eat, the restaurants and their menu would allow you to taste the local gastronomy. If you like sex in Lucerne, just visit My-ladies.ch. If you like culture, museums should satisfy you. If you like pretty towns, then getting lost in the streets of Lucerne will be a very good choice. In short, if you have the opportunity to go to Switzerland, Lucerne is a very beautiful destination.
